Click the above image to access the interactive Doctor Who Tube Map.
NB Open the browser window to full screen mode and allow all of the images a few moments to fully load. Not suitable for iPads.
Hover the mouse over the main line interchanges to take a closer look at the aliens, monsters and baddies.
That is insane!
ReplyDeleteNo it's... it's... ridonkulous. Yes.
Awesome work Crispian. I'm dressing up as Tennant in a few weeks so this'll get me in the mood :)
But of course! Linear timeline-style chronologies are inadequate for the Doctor (as illustrated by the recent attempts at relative Doctor vs. River Song chronologies). Using the universally-understood layout of a topological transit map (which simultaneously serves as a metaphor for a time lord’s perspective of space-time) is a brilliant move.
ReplyDeleteI have (so far) only three suggestions (don’t worry, I’ll think of more), all involving to some degree the aforementioned Dr. Song:
Putting River Song’s given name on her pop-up is a big spoiler. Yes, I know, the whole thing is a big spoiler, but beyond that caption, nothing on the map reveals that particular plot point. It would be nice to be able to refer recent converts to this map. Could you perhaps hide the information behind a spoiler warning, or have a spoiler toggle for the whole map?
There is no indication that the Doctor’s encounters with River Song follow different subjective timelines (although marking them with superscripts instead of listing her as a companion is a clue). As a fellow time-traveler with an independent personal chronology, do you think she might deserve her own line? I know is would make the map a bit busier, but in this case I think it would clarify things. (I doubt this is needed for other time-travelers—e.g. the Meddling Monk, the Master, and Capt. Harkness—because they apparently meet in the same relative order.)
Finally, how about an arrow here and there to indicate in which directions lie the Doctor’s personal future and past? This would be especially helpful applied to the previous suggestion.
Now I feel like a jerk. This is all brilliant. Kudos.
Great work - shame the inclusion of phrases like 'crafty little sods' for the Weeping Angels make it unsuitable for sharing with children.
ReplyDeleteWot, no Turlough or Dodo? I feel a bit pedantic for pointing out a lack of Sara Kingdom as well, but you did put in Rosita...
ReplyDeleteRaston Warrior Robot, although occurring in the 5th doctor's time line was encountered by the 3rd doctor - so surely these stations should cross at the very least?
ReplyDeleteIt's important. Don't want to get lost on the underground...
Sam - Helsinki
This is sheer genius, brilliant work, what fun.
ReplyDeleteOnly slight quibble is that the Tenth Doctor's line doesn't extend to Davros.
Brilliant work. Love it.
ReplyDeleteOne tiny thing: Stegosaurus has an 'o' in the middle. Yes I am a pedant.

Utterly brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this.
No mention of Turlough as a companion though. Intentional?
would love this as a poster any chance?
ReplyDeleteAren't you missing the 10th? doctor's encounter with Davros?
ReplyDeleteVery enjoyable, that. I can see it's a Labour of Love for both Dr. Who & the London Underground map!
ReplyDeleteQueries:
What connection is there between the Fifth & the Toclafane? Also, when did the Tenth ever meet the Silurians/Homo Reptilians?
I'm sure i could come up some more that haven't been mentioned already.
Absolutely fantastic! This is a fanatic’s labour of love dedicated to a genre support by a global community.
ReplyDeleteWatch out! TfL will work very hard to get this map taken down because of alleged copyright infringement. They've done so for other 'parodies' of their line maps.

There is no "S" next to the Kraal. Sarah Jane used the Doctor's screwdriver to rescue the doctor.
ReplyDeleteJust fantastic.
ReplyDeletebeautiful to look at but the interactive stuff is awesome.
Your really need to get out more, but I'm glad you didn't!
Delightful and such an impressive effort that it feels ungrateful and rude to quibble. #
ReplyDeleteBut it hasn't stopped anyone else.
Shouldn't the Third Doctor's line connect to Sontarans?
Once I pick my jaw up off the floor, I will tell you properly how amazing this website is. You put some great work into this, and should be commended.
ReplyDeleteGood job!!
Assuming by the lack of option on the order page that you've been told you can't sell this by the 'powers that be'. Disappointed as I'd love a big copy to go on the wall in my front hall. Kudos for such a great idea though.
ReplyDeleteHey. I got another confusion. On Three, Five, and Eleven's tracks, Ten is listed as a transfer at "Silurian". I don't recall him encountering a silurian but I could be wrong -- my main worry is that the Silurian transfer is not on Ten's (zoomed in) track. So is this three typos or two? what?!
ReplyDeletethis is fun :D Ten's is laid out pretty confusing, but wow, fun stuff!
I haven't gotten a chance to look at everything in detail, but I've caught at least one mistake specifically in grammar/word usage. On the Weeping Angels' mouseover, it should be "you're" instead of "your". That is all :)
ReplyDeleteHaving worked on a tiny Tube map once, I have some idea how much work you must have put into this map, it is brilliant and a big thank you. I'd love to know your working method, software, etc.
ReplyDeleteI squealed with delight on reading the description of the Silurians: "These are the buggers that David Icke has been warning us about".
Only slight query ... shouldn't Sarah Jane Smith feature on 3rd, 4th and 10th Doctor's profiles?
See you in 2008!
